John's Personal Statement

"For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to help people in whatever way possible. As a teen, I volunteered as a Candy Striper at my local hospital and did this until I left for college. I attended Concord University in Southern West Virginia and graduated with a Bachelors of Social Work and a Bachelors of Arts in Sociology. I was certain that my career path was in the service field helping others."

"After several years working in the adoption arena, I was offered a position in North Carolina in 2004 to work with people with Autism and Developmental Disabilities. Although I worried that the job might be a huge challenge, I quickly connected with the autism community and really enjoyed seeing the difference my work was making in the lives of those with developmental disabilities. The rewards for me were unexpected and I loved what I did!"

"As I followed my new career path, it didn't take long to realize that those with developmental disabilities are often under-served in many ways, and I wanted to do more. I decided to pursue a Masters of Occupational Therapy to better assist with the physical disabilities that limited some of the people I worked with, but I needed to take several prerequisites before I could apply. While researching schools in the area, I was encouraged to get certified as a massage therapist, because so many of the courses for massage therapy would cover the prerequisites I needed. I never dreamed I would feel, see and connect to the healing affects of massage and bodywork therapy like I did."

"This knowledge opened me up to be able to help anyone. I still work with people who have physical and developmental disabilities, but my clientele has grown. I enjoy helping everyone who needs massage as a healing, relaxing, and recharging part of their everyday lives. I want the massage experience to be a wonderful escape for my clients each time they see me. I work with each client individually to produce the most effective plan of treatment so that the healing process is ongoing."
